The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has begun mobilizing its members across various institutions in preparation for a possible nationwide strike. The union said the move followed the federal government’s failure to meet its long-standing demands, including improved funding for universities, unpaid allowances, and the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement.
ASUU leaders explained that several meetings and appeals to the government had yielded no tangible results, forcing the union to consider industrial action as a last resort. They also accused authorities of neglecting public education and failing to prioritize the welfare of university lecturers.
Students across different campuses have expressed fear that another strike could disrupt the academic calendar, urging both parties to reach an understanding before the situation worsens. Meanwhile, ASUU has said it remains open to dialogue but insists the government must take concrete action to avoid another nationwide shutdown of universities.
