Ex-senator Submits Bill To Remove President, Governors’ Control Over INEC, SIEC

A former Nigerian senator has introduced a new bill seeking to strip the President and state governors of their influence over the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIEC). The proposal, according to him, aims to strengthen democracy by ensuring that electoral bodies operate without political interference.

The bill, if passed, would grant INEC and SIECs full independence in carrying out their duties, including conducting free and fair elections. Many Nigerians have long expressed concerns that executive control undermines credibility in the electoral process. Supporters of the bill believe this reform could restore trust in elections across the country.

Analysts note that removing executive control would be a historic step in Nigeria’s democratic journey. However, the bill is expected to face tough debates in the National Assembly, as it directly challenges the political powers of both federal and state leaders.
