N72,000 minimum wage not fully implemented in Kaduna State -NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Kaduna State chapter, has raised concerns that the ₦72,000 minimum wage has not been fully implemented across all sectors in the state. According to NLC Chairperson, Ayuba Magaji Suleiman, while workers on Grade Levels 1–6 in the state civil service have started receiving the new wage, many workers at the local government level are still left out.

Suleiman explained that primary school teachers, local government employees, and primary healthcare workers are yet to benefit from the new wage structure. This, he said, has led to noticeable discrepancies in some local government areas, where teachers and health workers continue to earn based on the old salary scale. He recalled that although the state government had set up a Consequential Adjustment Committee in October 2024 and later signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with labour unions after a strike in December, the full implementation is still pending.

He added that while progress has been made with health workers under CONMESS and CONHESS, as well as some categories of civil servants, the broader adjustments for parastatals, tertiary institutions, and local government workers remain tied to the ongoing staff and pension verification exercise. The government has assured that this process will be completed by the end of September 2025, and the NLC is monitoring the timeline closely.

Reassuring workers, Suleiman urged patience and vigilance while promising that the Congress will not back down until all categories of workers and pensioners in Kaduna State benefit from the new minimum wage. He also noted the recent strike threat by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), stressing that engagements are ongoing with the government to resolve the matter.
