Tension is rising in Rivers State as the whereabouts of Governor Siminalayi Fubara remain unclear, despite his reinstatement after months of suspension.
On Wednesday, President Bola Tinubu lifted the emergency rule imposed on the state six months ago and restored Fubara as governor. Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, who served as sole administrator during the period, officially handed over and urged Rivers people to support Fubara as he resumes leadership.
However, reports indicate that the governor’s absence has created uncertainty and fueled speculation about his possible return to Port Harcourt. Residents are anxious, as the political climate remains fragile.
Arise Television correspondent Friday Olokor noted that, although the atmosphere in Port Harcourt is calm, the vacuum in leadership is concerning. He explained that the Rivers State House of Assembly, which is still split into factions, continues to meet separately, deepening political divisions.
Observers warn that the crisis has worsened the suffering of ordinary citizens. Calls are growing for reconciliation between rival factions of the Assembly to avoid a repeat of past political turmoil.
For now, the people of Rivers State await clarity on when Governor Fubara will physically return to office and resume his duties.
