UCL: ‘They insulted me throughout the game’ – Simeone on why he confronted Liverpool fan

Atletico Madrid coach, Diego Simeone, has revealed that a Liverpool supporter insulted him for the whole match during their 3-2 Champions League loss at Anfield on Wednesday night.

The Argentine manager was shown a red card after confronting the fan on the touchline in the second half of the game.

Liverpool made a strong start, scoring twice in the opening six minutes through Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah.

Atletico Madrid did not give up and later equalised in the 81st minute, with Marcos Llorente netting both goals for the visitors.

But the Reds secured victory when Virgil van Dijk scored a late header from a Dominik Szoboszlai cross.

As Liverpool fans celebrated the winning goal, Simeone walked toward one of the supporters but was quickly stopped by stewards. Reports also said he had earlier complained to the match officials about a fan in the front row who gave him the middle finger.

After the match, Simeone explained his actions, saying:
“They insulted me from behind the bench for the entire game. As a coach, I couldn’t respond. My reaction wasn’t right, but you don’t know how it feels to be insulted nonstop for 90 minutes. When Liverpool scored, I turned around and it continued, and with the tension, I reacted.”

The Atletico boss also shared what the referee told him after the clash.
“He said he understood, but I hope Liverpool can identify the person responsible so there will be consequences. The insults and gestures were constant, but in my role, I must remain calm even if it’s difficult.”
