Sowore sues DSS, Meta, X over alleged rights violations

Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has taken the Department of State Services (DSS), Meta (owners of Facebook), and X Corp to court. He filed two fundamental rights cases at the Federal High Court in Abuja, accusing them of violating his rights.

In a statement signed by his lawyer, Tope Temokun, Sowore’s legal team explained that the lawsuits challenge what they described as “unconstitutional censorship” of Sowore’s Facebook and X accounts.

The lawyers stressed that the case is about defending freedom of speech in Nigeria. They warned that if government agencies are allowed to control global social media platforms, Nigerians could lose their right to speak freely, leaving their voices at the mercy of those in power.

They further argued that Meta and X must not give in to illegal censorship demands from state authorities. According to them, by obeying such demands, the companies become part of the effort to silence people who are fighting for liberty.

The legal team also listed several demands before the court, asking for rulings in favor of Sowore.

This development comes shortly after the DSS filed a five-count charge against Sowore at the same Federal High Court in Abuja, also naming Meta and X as co-defendants in the case.
