Nigeria’s D’Tigress Secure Historic Win Against Australia at Paris Olympics

Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, the D’Tigress, made history by achieving their first Olympic win in 20 years at the 2024 Paris Olympics. They defeated the highly-ranked Australian team, the Opals, with a final score of 75-62 at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium on Monday, July 29.

The game started with Nigeria leading 18-17 at the end of the first quarter. They extended their lead to 41-28 by halftime, showcasing a strong performance. Australia attempted a comeback after the break, winning the third quarter 19-10, but Nigeria held firm and claimed victory in the fourth quarter with a 24-15 run. This remarkable win sparked wild celebrations among the Nigerian players and technical team.

This victory is significant as it marks Nigeria’s first win at the Olympics since the 2004 Athens Games, where they defeated South Korea in a classification game. The D’Tigress had never won an Olympic game in their previous two appearances, making this achievement all the more noteworthy.

Australia, ranked third in the competition’s power rankings, was considered a strong contender, while Nigeria was ranked 12th. Despite this, the Nigerian team’s determination and skill led them to a well-deserved triumph, demonstrating their growth and potential on the world stage.

This historic win is a moment of pride for Nigeria and a testament to the hard work and dedication of the D’Tigress. Fans and supporters are hopeful for more victories as the team continues to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
