Chelsea charged by FA with 74 alleged breaches over agent payments from 2009-2022

Chelsea Football Club has been hit with 74 charges by the Football Association (FA) for alleged breaches related to payments involving football agents, intermediaries, and third-party ownership of players.

The alleged violations cover a period from 2009 to 2022, with most incidents taking place between the 2010/11 and 2015/16 seasons. Chelsea has until September 19, 2025, to provide a response to the FA.

According to an FA statement, Chelsea has been charged under multiple regulations, including those covering football agents, intermediaries, and third-party investment in players. In total, 74 separate charges have been filed against the club.

These allegations occurred during Roman Abramovich’s ownership of Chelsea. The club is now under the ownership of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, who took over in May 2022.

Chelsea released a statement saying the club is cooperating with the FA and that the matter is largely related to issues discovered during the ownership change.

Chelsea explained that before the takeover, the new owners conducted a thorough review and found potential gaps in financial reporting and possible breaches of FA rules.

Once the purchase was complete, the club reported these matters to all relevant authorities, including the FA.

The club also emphasized its transparency during the investigation, providing full access to files and historical data.

Chelsea stated it will continue to work with the FA to resolve the charges as quickly as possible and thanked the FA for its cooperation in this complex case, which mainly involves events that happened over ten years ago.
