A new mural by famous street artist Banksy, showing a judge hitting a protester with a gavel, was removed from the Royal Courts of Justice in London.
The artwork showed a protester on the ground holding a bloodied sign while a judge in a traditional wig and gown struck him.
Banksy confirmed the piece by posting a picture of it on Instagram, and it appeared on the courthouse wall on Monday.
By Wednesday, the mural had been cleaned off after court administrators ordered its removal. They said the 143-year-old Victorian Gothic building needed to keep its historic appearance.
The Metropolitan Police said they are investigating a complaint that the mural could be considered criminal damage.
Banksy’s team did not immediately respond to requests for comments about the artwork.
Although the mural did not directly refer to a specific event, some people interpreted it as a comment on the UK government’s recent ban on the group Palestine Action. Nearly 900 people were arrested at a London protest against the ban last weekend.
The Royal Courts of Justice houses the Court of Appeal and the High Court, which have both been involved in cases connected to Palestine Action.
