Former Premier League referee David Coote has been charged with creating a “category A” indecent video involving a child.

He expressed deep remorse for his actions and said he was in a very dark place when the videos were made.

Coote also revealed that he had hidden his sexuality during his career because he feared mistreatment or abuse.

He explained that his sexuality was not the only reason he ended up in that situation, but admitted that being gay and hiding it had played a part in his struggles.

Coote said he suppressed his emotions and kept his sexuality a secret while working as a referee.

While this might have helped him professionally, he acknowledged it was harmful personally and contributed to a series of poor choices.
