Nigeria condemns Israeli airstrike in Qatar targeting Hamas leadership

The Nigerian government has expressed deep concern after reports of an Israeli airstrike in Doha, Qatar, that targeted senior Hamas leaders earlier this week.

In a statement, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa stressed the importance of respecting national sovereignty and international law, warning that such attacks could further destabilize the Middle East.

The government said the incident raises serious questions about regional stability and the prospects for ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Nigeria also praised Qatar for its long-standing role in mediating peace talks and urged all parties to avoid actions that could escalate tensions.

Authorities called for restraint and a renewed focus on dialogue, emphasizing that violence only increases mistrust and prolongs suffering.

Nigeria extended condolences to those affected by the airstrike and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting international efforts aimed at reducing conflict and promoting long-term peace.

The country said it will continue working with the United Nations and other global organizations to uphold stability and the rule of law in the region.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has remained tense since October 2023, when Hamas launched a surprise attack on southern Israel, killing more than 1,200 people and taking over 200 hostages.

Israel’s military operations in Gaza have caused widespread destruction and worsened the humanitarian crisis. Gaza’s health ministry reports that over 62,000 people have died in nearly two years of fighting.

Qatar has played a central role in mediation, hosting Hamas leaders in Doha and helping facilitate negotiations between the parties.
