Videos show Nepal politicians escaping protests by hanging on to army helicopters

Videos circulating online show Nepali politicians and government officials holding onto ropes attached to army helicopters to escape violent protests. The helicopters were deployed to rescue them as angry crowds tried to chase and attack the officials.

The footage, widely shared on X, highlighted emergency airlifts by the Nepali Army to evacuate officials during chaotic scenes in Kathmandu. Protesters could be seen rushing toward the helicopters as they hovered above the crowds.

Social media users reacted strongly to the videos. Some described it as a clever way to save lives, while others criticized it as evidence of corrupt officials fleeing in fear.

As of Wednesday, at least 19 people had died and over 500 were injured in clashes around the Federal Parliament and other areas of Kathmandu.

The protests began after the government tried to ban 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, and X, due to non-compliance with registration rules.

Although the ban was later reversed, anger over alleged corruption made the protests even bigger.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday, saying he stepped down to allow for a political solution to the problems.

Protesters continued to target government officials, setting fire to homes and government buildings. The Nepali Army has taken control of security, carrying out rescue operations using helicopters.

After a 24-hour shutdown, Kathmandu airport reopened as authorities worked to restore order and normal life in the city.
