The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the Nigerian Senate to immediately reinstate Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan so she can continue her work in the chamber.
The group made this demand in a statement released on Tuesday, stressing that her suspension has gone on long enough and should not be prolonged.
SERAP pointed out that the suspension, which started in March, has already ended and should not be extended under any excuse.
The organization explained that no Nigerian law prevents a senator from resuming duty while a case is still being heard in court. It described the continued suspension as unjust and a violation of her rights.
It further accused the Senate of hiding behind pending court cases to stop Akpoti-Uduaghan from returning to her seat.
SERAP also warned that preventing her from resuming undermines the rule of law. It noted that Natasha had already informed the Clerk of the National Assembly that she intended to return on September 4, yet she was still blocked.
The group demanded that all her unpaid salaries and allowances during the suspension period should be released without delay.
