Bayer Leverkusen appoint former Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand as coach after Ten Hag dismissal

Bayer Leverkusen have named Kasper Hjulmand, the former Denmark national team manager, as their new head coach on a two-year deal, following the firing of Erik ten Hag.

Hjulmand, 53, led Denmark to the Euro 2020 semi-finals, where they lost to England in extra time. He resigned after Denmark’s 2-0 loss to Germany in the last 16 of Euro 2024, ending four years with the national team.

He also managed Mainz 05 during the 2014-15 Bundesliga season and now returns to Germany to manage last season’s Bundesliga runners-up.

“I have always admired Bayer Leverkusen as a well-run and ambitious club. It is an honor to be trusted with this team,” Hjulmand said.

He added that he is motivated to work with both experienced and new players to shape the club’s future.

Erik ten Hag was dismissed after just two Bundesliga matches. He had replaced Xabi Alonso in May, who left for Real Madrid after guiding Leverkusen to a historic double in 2023-24, winning the Bundesliga and the German Cup without losing a game.

Hjulmand now faces the challenge of rebuilding the team after losing key players such as Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Jonathan Tah, and Granit Xhaka.

Leverkusen have spent around €170 million ($199.8 million) on new signings, including Ibrahim Maza, Malik Tillman, Jarell Quansah, Loic Bade, and Mark Flekken.

Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro said that a new and developing squad needs clear guidance, and Hjulmand’s open and understanding approach will benefit the team.

Leverkusen will resume their Bundesliga campaign on September 12 against Eintracht Frankfurt and will travel to Copenhagen for their Champions League opener on September 18.
