Lionel Messi gave an emotional goodbye to Argentina supporters during his final competitive home match.
The football superstar scored twice, leading Argentina to a 3-0 win over Venezuela at Estadio Mas Monumental in Buenos Aires, and hinted he might retire before the next World Cup.
The atmosphere was full of emotion as Messi played his last official match in his homeland, which he had described as “very, very special” in the days leading up to the game.
He couldn’t hold back tears when fans chanted his name during warm-ups, while his family proudly watched from the stands.
Now 38, Messi, widely regarded as one of football’s greatest players, suggested that he may not play another World Cup.
Speaking to reporters, he said, “Same as I said before about the World Cup, I don’t think I’ll play another. Because of my age, it’s logical. But I’m motivated to play it. I go day by day and see how I feel.”
He explained that he prefers being honest with himself about how he feels. “I enjoy playing when I feel good. If I don’t, I’d rather not be there. I haven’t decided about the World Cup yet. I’ll finish the season, go through preseason, and then decide,” Messi added.
Reflecting on the night, Messi said it was like a fairytale. “This year we had many matches. I was able to play three in a row. Today may be my last official game here, but I try to enjoy each day.
Being able to celebrate with my people in Argentina was a dream come true. For many years I received love at Barcelona, and it was my dream to experience that here too.”
Messi’s wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, writing, “Proud of you, every step you take. How lucky we are to be with you on this journey! We love you.”
Argentina’s head coach, Lionel Scaloni, was also moved to tears, saying, “This match is special for Leo. Coaching him has been a pleasure. If this is his last game, we’ll make sure to celebrate it properly because he deserves it.”
Although Argentina will next play Ecuador, Messi will not be part of that match, leaving fans to cherish the memories of his emotional farewell at home.
