Tiwa Savage has spoken up for fellow Nigerian singer Tems after her name was not included in the list of Afrobeats’ “Big 3.”
The term “Big 3” is usually used to describe Davido, Burna Boy, and Wizkid, who are celebrated as Nigeria’s biggest global music stars.
Tiwa, however, questioned why only male artistes are mentioned. She pointed out that this view ignores the success of women who are also breaking records in Afrobeats.
Speaking during an interview with BBC Radio 1Xtra, Tiwa said female artistes deserve equal recognition and insisted that Tems should be part of the conversation.
She explained that some artistes have more money to push their music through radio play and promotions, which makes them more visible. But that doesn’t mean others are less talented or less successful.
Tiwa then asked why people discuss the Afrobeats Top 3 without mentioning Tems, saying it doesn’t make sense.
Tems gained international fame in 2020 after her collaboration with Wizkid on Essence. She later won her first Grammy in 2023 for her role in Wait For U.
In 2025, Tems went on to win her second Grammy Award in the Best African Performance category, further proving her global influence.
