A Nigerian Catholic priest based in Germany, Rev. Fr. Angelo Chidi Unegbu, has shared a strong warning about societies where wealth determines respect.
He believes that when money is the main reason people are valued, the society loses its humanity and fairness.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, he wrote that living in a country where respect is tied to wealth is like living in a jungle.
In such an environment, no one is genuinely safe, not even those considered rich. Everyone is vulnerable when greed and material status guide how people treat each other.
He stressed that true respect should come from character, actions, and integrity, not from bank accounts or expensive possessions.
A society that judges people by money alone fosters fear, envy, and insecurity, making it hard for anyone to feel truly secure or appreciated.
According to Fr. Unegbu, a country where wealth dictates respect may seem to reward success, but it also encourages selfishness and competition at the expense of compassion and justice.
In such places, relationships become transactional, and people’s worth is constantly measured by their material wealth rather than their humanity.
His message serves as a reminder that real value lies in kindness, honesty, and moral integrity. A society that prioritizes character over money is one where everyone can feel safe, respected, and part of a community.
