Court orders two DNA tests on Mohbad’s son

The Magistrate Court in Ikorodu has directed that two DNA tests be conducted on Liam Aloba, the son of late Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

The order was given on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, by Magistrate Adefisoye Sonuga, after considering an application from Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, who requested a paternity test.

In the case, the late singer’s wife, Omowunmi Cynthia Aloba, was listed as the respondent. The application was filed under the Family Court of Lagos State (Civil Procedure) 2012 and the Magistrate Courts (Civil Procedure) Rules 2009.

Joseph Aloba asked that DNA samples be collected from the remains of his son at the Military Hospital in Yaba for testing, either in Lagos or at another certified facility outside the state. He also requested that a separate test be carried out abroad at his own expense.

He explained that doubts about Liam’s paternity made it necessary to settle the matter once and for all, stressing that the outcome would be important for legal responsibilities and the child’s future welfare.

During the court session, Aloba was represented by Augustine Adegbemi from the chambers of Dr Wahab Shittu (SAN) & Co., while Kabir Akingbolu appeared for Omowunmi. Since the application was not opposed, the magistrate approved the request.

The court ordered that the DNA tests be conducted in accredited hospitals in Nigeria and abroad, with both parties or their representatives present when samples are taken.

The case was adjourned until November 11, 2025, for further proceedings.

Mohbad, aged 26, died on September 12, 2023, after sustaining an injury on his arm. He was treated at his Lekki home by a nurse but developed seizures and passed away shortly after. He was buried the next day.

Following public outcry, his body was exhumed on September 21, 2023, for an autopsy ordered by the Lagos State Government.

The autopsy report, released on April 29, 2024, stated that the cause of death could not be confirmed because the internal organs had already decomposed.

In June 2024, the Coroner ordered a second independent autopsy after Mohbad’s family requested another review.
