A 25-year-old university graduate, Faruk Mumuni, has been sentenced by the Federal High Court in Lagos for illegally selling Cannabis Sativa.
The verdict was delivered on Friday by Justice Dehinde Dipeolu. The case was handled by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Mumuni received a two-year jail sentence or the option to pay a fine of N5 million after being found guilty of trafficking 149 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa.
He and his mother were arrested on August 13, 2025, in Mushin, Lagos State. He faced two charges under Section 11(c) of the NDLEA Act, 2004.
During the court session, NDLEA lawyer Buhari Abdulahi presented the charges and asked the court to formally read them to Mumuni.
Mumuni admitted to both charges. The prosecution reviewed the evidence and urged the court to convict him based on his plea and the exhibits provided.
After considering all the submissions, Justice Dipeolu found Mumuni guilty as charged.
Mumuni’s lawyer, E.U. Okenyi, asked the court for leniency. He highlighted that his client was a first-time offender, had admitted guilt early, and was genuinely remorseful.
“My Lord, the convict did not waste the court’s time. He is very sorry and asks for mercy. We request that the court consider a non-prison sentence or allow a fine instead,” Okenyi said.
Justice Dipeolu sentenced Mumuni to two years in prison, starting from his arrest date, or alternatively, to pay a fine of N5 million.
