Liverpool and Newcastle United have agreed on a record-breaking £125 million deal for striker Alexander Isak, who is set to sign a six-year contract with the Premier League champions.
The Telegraph and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the agreement, bringing an end to one of the biggest transfer stories of the summer. Personal terms have already been agreed between Liverpool and Isak.
The striker is expected to complete his medical at Anfield on Monday before the transfer window closes at 7pm. Once confirmed, it will be the most expensive transfer in British football history.
This record beats the £115 million fee Chelsea paid to Brighton for Moises Caicedo in 2023.
Liverpool had made an earlier bid of £110m plus add-ons in August, but Newcastle rejected it. The club only agreed to sell after certain conditions were met, as they had valued their star man at £150m.
Tension grew earlier this month when Isak made a strong statement on Instagram, making it clear he wanted to leave the club. His post came shortly after he was named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year for 2024/25.
In the message, he thanked his teammates and Newcastle fans for their support but said broken promises and lost trust made it impossible for the relationship to continue. He explained that change was in the best interest of everyone involved.
Newcastle quickly dismissed his claims and released a statement saying that no official had ever promised him an exit this summer. The club insisted Isak remained under contract and they had not given him permission to leave.
Since joining Newcastle from Real Sociedad in 2022, Isak has scored 62 goals and provided 11 assists in 109 appearances, making him one of the most important players in the Premier League.
