Manchester United earned their first win of the season with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Burnley, thanks to a late penalty decision that stirred conversation.
Burnley initially took the lead when Josh Cullen accidentally scored an own goal. However, Lyle Foster quickly leveled the score with a close-range finish.
Bryan Mbeumo then gave Manchester United the advantage again, but Burnley responded, with Jadon Anthony scoring to make it 2-2.
In added time, Amad Diallo’s shirt was pulled inside the penalty area. Although the referee initially allowed play to continue, he reviewed the incident using the pitchside monitor.
Following the review, a penalty was awarded to Manchester United, and Bruno Fernandes converted it to secure the win at Old Trafford.
The Premier League Match Centre released a statement on X explaining the decision: “After VAR review, the referee overturned the original no-penalty call for Manchester United.
Referee announcement: ‘After review, Burnley eleven has a sustained pulling action on Manchester United sixteen, which results in a penalty kick. My final decision is yellow card and penalty.’”
