World record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan, will not take part in this year’s Diamond League final in Zurich.
Amusan had already qualified for the race as the second-best athlete this season with 27 points, but she has now withdrawn. Her spot will be filled by Bahamian runner Devynne Charlton.
The women’s 100m hurdles final will still feature strong competitors such as Charlton, reigning world champion Danielle Williams, Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent, the Netherlands’ Nadine Visser, Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji and Selina von Jackowski, as well as American athletes Tonea Marshall, Grace Stark, and Kendra Harrison.
Despite her withdrawal, Amusan still holds the Zurich meet record of 12.29 seconds, which she set in 2022 when she claimed her second Diamond League title. The Nigerian star has also won the event three times in a row between 2021 and 2023.
Her decision to miss the final may be to prepare properly for the World Championships in Tokyo next month. She struggled in her last Diamond League race in Lausanne, where she clipped the first hurdle and finished fifth in 12.82 seconds.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Ezekiel Nathaniel, the African record holder in the men’s 400m hurdles, will contest the Diamond League title in Zurich. He recently secured his first professional career win at the Lausanne meet, finishing with a time of 48.08 seconds.
Also joining the lineup is Udodi Onwuzurike, who made his Diamond League debut last week and has been listed for the men’s 200m final.
