An elderly passenger was asked to leave a flight in Nigeria on August 27 after threatening to slap a flight attendant. The conflict began when the crew requested he move from a seat near the emergency exit.
Michael Achimugu, spokesperson for the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), shared the story online. He explained that the pilot refused to take off until the passenger was removed from the plane due to the threat.
The passenger later apologized and calmed down. He is expected to be allowed to board another flight later today.
The incident started when the elderly passenger, who had chosen a seat near the exit door, was asked by the cabin crew to change seats for safety reasons. He refused to comply and threatened the air hostess twice.
Airport security, along with Air Force personnel, were called to remove him from the plane. NCAA Consumer Protection Officers also intervened to calm the situation.
The passenger was informed why he needed to be removed for safety reasons. The pilot emphasized that he could not fly with someone who posed a potential risk.
After being escorted back to the terminal, the passenger understood the consequences of his actions. He has since calmed down and will be allowed to take the evening flight.
The NCAA reminded the public that both cabin crew and passengers share the responsibility of keeping situations calm. Threats or violence onboard are never acceptable.
Passengers who are unhappy with airline services are encouraged to report issues to the NCAA Consumer Protection Department at http://cpd.ncaa.gov.ng for proper resolution.
Everyone is urged to respect cabin crew and ensure a safe, pleasant flying experience for all.
