Horrific moment bullfighter is gored to de@th by bull during his first performance

A 22-year-old bullfighter tragically lost his life during his very first performance, and the shocking moment was captured on video. One audience member also died shortly afterward.

Manuel Maria Trindade performed on Friday, August 22, in front of almost 7,000 people at Lisbon’s Campo Pequeno bullring, facing a 1,500-pound bull.

Trindade ran toward the bull, but it charged back at him. When he tried to grab its horns, the animal lifted him and carried him across the ring.

Other bullfighters rushed in but could not stop the bull. They eventually managed to make it move by pulling its tail and shining lights in its eyes.

Paramedics arrived quickly, but Trindade had severe head injuries. He was declared brain dead at the hospital and also suffered cardiorespiratory arrest, dying on Saturday, August 23, according to Portuguese media.

A 73-year-old orthopedic surgeon in the crowd, Vasco Morais Batista, fell ill after witnessing the event and later died in the hospital. Reports said he suffered an aortic aneurysm, though it is unclear if the stress of the performance contributed.

Trindade’s mother, Alzira, wrote an open letter condemning online users who celebrated her son’s death, blaming it on his participation in bullfighting. She addressed the letter to the Portuguese animal rights party People-Animals-Nature (PAN) and its supporters.

Alzira asked if those celebrating her son’s death really knew him or his feelings about animals. She said her son was part of a group that handled bulls with skill and honor without harming them.

Portuguese bullfighting is different from the Spanish version because it does not aim to kill the bull. Participants, called forcados, try to stop or tire out the bull by grabbing it by the horns.

Even though Portuguese bullfighting is less cruel, animal rights groups and some political parties in Portugal continue to call for the sport to be banned.
