Lere Olayinka, who advises the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on public communications and social media, has recommended a new rule for Nigerians.
He suggested that anyone opening a social media account should provide their National Identification Number (NIN) and a valid government-issued ID, such as a passport, voter’s card, or driver’s license.
Olayinka said this step would help enforce stricter control over how people use social media platforms.
He shared his idea on his X account, explaining that using NIN and a valid ID should be mandatory for starting and managing social media accounts.
According to him, the goal of this proposal is to fight fake news and make people more responsible online.
In Nigeria, the NIN is already connected to services like bank accounts and phone numbers, making it a familiar tool for identification.
