Nnamdi Azikiwe University has shared the results of its inquiry into the death of a 100-level law student.
Isabella Chioma Ajana passed away on July 9, 2025, three days after she was taken to the university’s medical centre due to complications from diabetes.
According to her roommates at Elmada hostel, they lost their room key and asked the hostel mistress for a replacement. The mistress reportedly demanded N120,000 for the spare key, meaning each of the three roommates would have to pay N40,000.
The roommates said they could not afford the money and explained that Ms. Ajana urgently needed her insulin. They claimed the hostel mistress refused to help.
They said this refusal contributed to Ms. Ajana’s worsening health, which eventually led to her death at the University Medical Centre.
In response, Nnamdi Azikiwe University issued a statement on Friday evening, August 22, announcing that the medical staff who treated Ms. Ajana have been suspended for three months while the investigation continues.
Regarding the hostel mistress, the university stated that Elmada hostel is jointly owned but privately managed.
The university called on Elmada hostel management to terminate the mistress’s employment immediately. They also said they would review their partnership with the hostel in the future.
