Chelsea to donate portion of £11.4million Club World Cup bonuses to Diogo Jota’s family in incredible gesture

Chelsea players have decided to give a portion of their Club World Cup bonuses to the family of the late Diogo Jota, who passed away last month at the age of 28.

Enzo Maresca’s 24-man squad for the tournament was scheduled to receive a total bonus of £11.4 million for winning the competition.

In a remarkable act of generosity, the players chose to donate part of their earnings to help Jota’s widow and family, who were left devastated after the tragic car accident that claimed Jota, his brother Andre Silva, and his three children.

At this time, it is not known exactly how much of their bonuses the players will contribute.

Each member of the squad was due to earn around £475,000 for their role in securing the tournament victory.

Before the donations, their total bonuses were already subject to deductions for taxes and social security contributions.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are planning to honour their former Portuguese winger, a fan favourite, with a statue outside Anfield.

The club will also hold a minute of silence for Jota ahead of their Premier League match against Bournemouth this Friday.

Throughout the 2025/26 season, Liverpool players will wear a ‘Forever 20’ emblem on their shirts to commemorate Jota.

Additionally, Jota’s No.20 jersey has been retired at all levels of the club as a heartfelt tribute. He scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for the Reds during his time there.

Michael Edwards, CEO of FSG, explained the gesture: “We understood how important this was to our supporters.

We also wanted to include Diogo’s wife, Rute, and his family in this decision and make sure they knew first. I believe this is the first time Liverpool has honoured a player in this way.”

He added, “Diogo joined us in 2020, wearing number 20 with pride. As far as Liverpool Football Club is concerned, he will always be our number 20.”
