Billionaire businessman, Bill Chisholm officially takes over basketball club Boston Celtics in $6.1bn deal

American billionaire Bill Chisholm has officially taken over the Boston Celtics after the NBA approved a record-breaking $6.1 billion sale. The announcement comes five months after the deal was first agreed.

The NBA confirmed in a statement that its Board of Governors unanimously approved the sale of the controlling stake in the Celtics to an investor group led by Chisholm. The league added that the transaction will be completed very soon.

Chisholm, co-founder and managing director of Symphony Technology Group, purchased the team along with co-investors. At the time, the $6.1 billion valuation was the highest ever for a North American sports franchise.

This record was later overtaken by the $10 billion sale of the Los Angeles Lakers to billionaire Mark Walter.

When the sale was first revealed, it was expected that Wyc Grousbeck would remain CEO and governor of the team until the 2027-28 season.

However, recent reports say Chisholm will now take over as governor because Grousbeck no longer meets the NBA’s rule requiring a minimum 15% ownership stake.

Even with the change, Chisholm — a Massachusetts native and lifelong Celtics supporter — is still expected to work closely with Grousbeck in managing the team, following their original plan.

The Boston Celtics remain one of the most successful franchises in NBA history, with 18 championship titles. Their latest win came in 2024, further cementing their place as basketball legends.
