Flood claims eight lives, five bodies still missing in Ebonyi

A recent flood in the Enohia Itim community of Afikpo Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, has caused great loss, killing at least eight people. The tragedy happened after several days of heavy rain, which caused water to overflow in a plantain plantation.

The flood destroyed over 800 farms and affected more than 800 people living in the area. Among those who died were three children. While three bodies have been recovered, five people are still missing, and search efforts are ongoing.

Local officials, including the Councillor representing Itim Ward, Francis Abani Okpani, confirmed the rescue operations are continuing to find those still missing. The Chairman of Afikpo Local Government Area, Chief Timothy Nwachi, expressed deep sadness over the disaster.

He offered his condolences to the families affected and assured that help and relief materials will be provided through cooperation with state and federal agencies.

Afikpo had already been identified by the Federal Ministry of Environment as a place prone to flooding.

Chief Nwachi encouraged residents to prepare for the effects of climate change by keeping drainage systems open and waterways clear of debris to reduce the risk of future floods.

This tragic flood has reminded the community of the need to stay vigilant and work together to prevent such disasters and support those impacted.
