Amusan wins fifth consecutive national 100m hurdles title in Lagos

Tobi Amusan has proven once again that she is Nigeria’s top hurdler. At the 2025 Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) National Trials in Lagos, she claimed her fifth straight national title in the women’s 100m hurdles.

The race took place at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex. Amusan, 28, got off to a fast start and finished strong, winning with a time of 12.57 seconds. Adaobi Tabugbo came second with 13.03 seconds, and Faith Osamuyi was third in 13.36 seconds.

Amusan’s win strengthens her position as the favourite ahead of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September.

In the men’s 400m event, Gafar Badmus was the standout performer. He crossed the line in 45.71 seconds to take the top spot. Ezekiel Asuquo finished second with 46.29 seconds, while David Akhalu came third in 46.91 seconds.

There was a surprise twist in the women’s 400m final. Patience Okon-George, a veteran in the sport, was disqualified. That opened the door for young star Favour Onyah, who took full advantage and won with a time of 52.69 seconds. Opeyemi Deborah Oke and Anita Enaruna finished second and third, respectively.

In the women’s 100m sprint, Chioma Nweke, the African U-20 champion, pulled off a stunning victory to win her first senior national title. She beat Olayinka Olajide with a time of 11.27 seconds. Olajide came in second with 11.39 seconds, and Iyanuoluwa Bada followed closely in third place with 11.45 seconds.
