Rivers: Fubara-led PDP reacts as governor’s supporters dump party for ADC

Several political loyalists of suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, have left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a party recently embraced by opposition leaders in preparation for the 2027 elections.

Reports indicate that these former supporters are now aligning with ex-governor Rotimi Amaechi, who is believed to be pursuing the ADC’s presidential ticket. The political shift comes as tensions rise within Rivers State’s ruling PDP camp.

The ADC was formally launched in Rivers on July 23, with a major rally in Port Harcourt attended by Amaechi and other top opposition figures. This event marked the ADC’s entry into the state’s political landscape and signaled growing support from key players.

A reliable source revealed that many PDP members from Fubara’s circle defected to the ADC. There are also claims that Fubara himself may soon exit the PDP, though it remains unclear if he will join the opposition coalition or the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

When contacted, Sydney Gbara, spokesperson for the Fubara-aligned PDP faction in Rivers, stated that the group remains with the PDP for now, unless the governor decides otherwise. He said they would only change parties if Fubara leads the way.

Responding to news of the defections, Gbara described it as a matter of personal choice. He explained that while some are moving away, many others continue to look up to Fubara for political direction and remain committed to his leadership.

Governor Fubara was suspended from office on March 18, 2025, along with his deputy and state lawmakers, due to unresolved political conflicts. He is expected to return to office in September, a development that may determine the next phase of his political journey.
