The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has issued a strong warning to Nigerians planning to visit the United States. They are advising travelers to follow all visa rules closely to avoid strict travel restrictions being placed on Nigeria.
NIS spokesperson AS Akinlabi signed the advisory. It was released after U.S. officials expressed concern about Nigerians breaking visa rules. The NIS warned that those who break the rules could lose their visas, be deported, and even be banned from entering the U.S. in the future.
The statement reminded Nigerians that U.S. immigration checks don’t stop at the airport. Even after entering the U.S., travelers are still being watched. If they break any visa conditions, such as overstaying, they could face serious punishments including being sent back home and losing their chance to travel to the U.S. again.
The advisory focused on two major groups of travelers – students and tourists – who often make mistakes with their visa use.
For students, the NIS said it’s very important to stay active in school. Dropping out, not attending classes, or changing programs without permission can make the visa invalid and stop future travels to the U.S.
On tourism, the advisory talked about the U.S. government’s tough rules against “birth tourism.” This happens when pregnant women travel to the U.S. just to give birth so the baby gets American citizenship.
The NIS warned that U.S. visa officers will reject tourist visa requests if they suspect the main reason is to give birth in America.
In the end, the NIS promised to keep working with the U.S. Embassy in Abuja to make sure Nigerians travel legally and follow all visa rules properly.
