Lowballing Super Eagles players in transfer market – Osimhen, Lookman as case study

Victor Osimhen has officially joined Galatasaray after spending the 2024/2025 season on loan from Napoli.

The Nigerian striker had a phenomenal campaign in Turkey, ending as the top scorer in the league with 26 goals.

In total, he scored 37 goals in all competitions, setting a new record as the highest-scoring foreign player in a single Turkish season.

Osimhen didn’t need to prove his quality. Two years earlier, he scored 26 goals to help Napoli win their first Serie A title in 33 years.

Despite his achievements, Napoli treated him poorly. They tried forcing him to move to Saudi Arabia, and a last-minute deal to Chelsea collapsed before he ended up at Galatasaray.

Napoli’s attitude continued this summer. Galatasaray eventually agreed to pay the €75 million release clause in two instalments and included a 10% profit share for Napoli if he’s sold in the future.

However, Galatasaray is restricted from selling him to any Italian club for the next two years.

Sports analyst Wale Adigun criticised Napoli’s behaviour. He believes Osimhen deserved more respect for what he gave the club.

He explained that Napoli paid a large fee for him and expected a big return, but the arrival of Antonio Conte worsened things for Osimhen.

Adigun noted that in a conflict between a star player and a high-profile coach like Conte, the club would always back the coach.

While some of the transfer clauses, like the sell-on fee, are standard, others, like the ban on selling to Italian clubs, seem personal.

He added that Osimhen probably has no interest in returning to Italy after the way he was treated.

Ademola Lookman is also facing transfer challenges. Atalanta rejected Inter Milan’s latest offer of €42 million plus €3 million in bonuses.

Atalanta is holding out for around €50 million, even though Lookman has just one year left on his contract.

There are claims that Lookman had a verbal agreement with the club to allow a move, and he’s now reportedly angry over the rejected bid.

He’s also unhappy that Inter plans to offer him just €4 million per year.

According to Adigun, Lookman should have made his move last year after his stellar performance, including a hat-trick in the Europa League final.

He pointed out that Atalanta runs a smart business model and always aims to maximise profits.

TransferMarkt values Lookman at €60 million, while Atalanta’s €50 million asking price is seen as fair.

Inter Milan is known for being cautious in the market, but Adigun expects both clubs to eventually reach an agreement.

He believes Inter needs younger players like Lookman to refresh their aging squad.
