The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has announced a 15% import tax on Nigeria and several other African countries. Nations affected by this move include Zimbabwe, Zambia, Uganda, Mozambique, Mauritius, Ghana, Malawi, Lesotho, and Madagascar.

The decision was revealed in a White House statement issued on Thursday. It explained that the changes will take effect from 12:01 a.m. on goods either entering the U.S. for use or removed from storage for sale.

In addition to the 15% tariff on these African countries, the United States also introduced heavier duties on others. South Africa and Libya each received a 30% tariff, while Tunisia faces a 25% rate.

Countries outside Africa were also impacted. The United Kingdom now has a 10% tariff, India 25%, and Japan 15%. The list includes several others as part of a broader global trade measure.

Earlier on April 2, 2025, the U.S. had already announced import tariffs on a number of countries, with Nigeria listed at the time. This latest Executive Order builds on that earlier decision, signaling continued changes in America’s international trade approach under Trump.
