Some Nigerians have expressed displeasure over President Bola Tinubu’s recent announcement regarding the Super Falcons’ reward, especially because he mentioned the amount in U.S. dollars.
On Monday, July 28, President Tinubu welcomed the Nigerian women’s football team after their historic 10th win at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which took place in Morocco.
During the reception, Tinubu revealed that each of the 24 players would receive a cash gift of $100,000.
He also promised that all the players would be given a three-bedroom house. In addition, he announced a reward of $50,000 each for members of the technical team.
“I have received this trophy on behalf of all Nigerians, and I say to you: thank you for the dedication, passion, and for reminding us of the strength of the Nigerian spirit. On behalf of a grateful nation, I hereby confer on the players and the 11-man technical team the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
Additionally, I hereby direct the allocation of a three-bedroom apartment to each of the players and members of the technical team.
In addition, there is a cash award of the naira equivalent of $100,000 each to the 24 players, and the equivalent of $50,000 each to the 11-man technical team.”
However, some Nigerians who saw the news online felt disappointed that the President used dollars when making the announcement. They argued that the prize should have only been mentioned in Naira, considering the country’s current economic situation.
Others tried to calm the backlash, pointing out that the President said the dollar amount would be paid out in its Naira equivalent.
