Imported expired maize, rice flooding Nigerian market – Babachir Lawal knocks Tinubu govt

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal, has openly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of importing expired maize and rice into the Nigerian market. According to Lawal, this practice is destroying local agriculture and making life harder for ordinary Nigerians.

During a recent interview on Trust TV, Lawal expressed disappointment in the direction the country is heading under the current leadership. He said the government has failed to bring any meaningful improvement to the lives of citizens since taking office. As a farmer himself, he shared personal insight into the struggles of the agricultural sector. He noted that while the price of fertilizer has risen sharply to around N70,000, the market price for a bag of maize has fallen to N65,000, making farming unprofitable.

Lawal believes that the situation is worsened by the deliberate importation of expired food products, which flood the market and push local farmers out of business. He described farming in Nigeria as a “lost venture” under current conditions.

In the same interview, he revealed that a group of political leaders from the North is already working on plans to remove the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from power in the 2027 general elections. He stated that many in the region are unhappy with Tinubu’s leadership and believe real change is needed.

He also criticized the president’s political appointments, claiming they are aimed at dividing the population along ethnic and religious lines. According to him, even many of the Muslims who supported Tinubu during the 2023 elections now feel abandoned and underrepresented.
