Seven people were injured early Saturday morning after a three-storey building that was still under construction fell down in Umuahia, Abia State. The building, located near Olokoro Road in the Federal Low-Cost Housing Estate, collapsed around 3 a.m. on July 26.
The falling structure also damaged a nearby bungalow where a family of seven lived. Luckily, no one died in the incident. A nursing mother and her five-month-old baby were among those rescued from the debris and quickly taken to the hospital for treatment.
Local residents said the building had been looking unsafe for a long time. One resident, Ugwumba Shedrack, mentioned that they had been worried for months. He said they heard a loud crash in the early hours of the morning and later found out the building had collapsed. He also claimed the property belonged to a politician who left it in poor condition.
Kingsley Agomoh, the head of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), visited the area to see how bad the damage was. He was thankful that no lives were lost and announced that the site had been closed off to prevent further danger.
Agomoh said that an official investigation is already underway to find out what caused the collapse. He also made it clear that the building’s owner would be held accountable and punished according to the law.
