Poor welfare: IGP meets protesting retired police officers

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, recently met with a group of retired police officers who took to the streets of Abuja to protest poor welfare conditions after retirement.

The meeting between the police boss and the retired officers happened at the Peacekeeping Hall inside the Force Headquarters in Abuja, according to a report by DAILY POST.

Earlier that day, the retired officers had protested outside the National Assembly. They were asking the government to remove them from the Contributory Pension Scheme, also known as CPS.

Most of the protesters were elderly men. Even though it was raining, they stood outside holding signs and singing songs to express their frustration with how the government has treated them since retirement.

Before the meeting, the Inspector-General had promised to speak directly with the retired officers. He said he wanted to hear their complaints about poor pensions and benefits in person.

During the discussion, Egbetokun told the former officers that the Police Force is working on improving their welfare. However, he explained that removing the police from the contributory pension scheme is not something that can happen right away.

He also advised the leaders of the protest not to share false or misleading information. According to him, the Police Force will never abandon its retired officers, and their welfare remains a priority.
