Atiku abandoned PDP after 2023 election loss – Ex-Minister Anenih claims

Former Women Affairs Minister and long-time PDP member Josephine Anenih said that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar left the party after losing the 2023 presidential election. She said he stopped being involved in party matters right after the results came out.

While speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday night, July 17, Anenih explained that Atiku has not attended PDP meetings since the election. This, she said, has raised serious concerns about whether he still cares about the party.

Her comments followed Atiku’s official resignation from the PDP. In a letter dated July 14, 2025, and sent to his ward chairman in Jada Local Government Area, Adamawa State, Atiku said he was leaving because of differences he could not settle with the party. He also said he was unhappy with the way the PDP was being run and felt it no longer followed its original goals.

Anenih added that women from the PDP’s Board of Trustees even went to visit Atiku before now, asking him to help improve leadership within the party. She said it was clear to them that something was wrong.

Despite his resignation, Anenih said the PDP is still solid. She noted that the party has strong support from regular people, especially at the grassroots, and there are many loyal members who are committed to keeping it alive.

She pointed out that the PDP did not start with famous politicians. In 1998, people like her built the party from the ground up and helped it win elections. She quoted Chief Bode George, saying that people can come and go, but those who truly believe in the party will stay and keep working hard for it.

Anenih ended by saying the PDP will not collapse while people like her are still around. She believes the party has a future, and even if some big names leave, its core supporters will keep it going strong.
