Popular Nollywood actress and film producer, Mary Remmy Njoku, has spoken out about a serious issue she faced with medication in Nigeria. After falling sick with food poisoning while filming, she shared her concern that fake drugs might be in circulation.
Mary explained on Instagram that she had a bad reaction to medicine bought from a well-known pharmacy in Nigeria. She had purchased Imodium, which is meant to help with diarrhea, but the drug didn’t work.
She said she used the Imodium for three days, but her condition didn’t improve. Her stomach problem stayed the same even after taking the tablets regularly.
However, when her husband gave her the same medicine—but bought from another country—she quickly started feeling better. In just five minutes, her symptoms stopped.
The actress, who is a mother of three, is asking NAFDAC to look into the situation and find out what is going on. She believes the difference between the two drugs shows something is wrong.
In her own words, Mary said: “I got food poisoning during filming and sent someone to buy Imodium from a big pharmacy in Nigeria. I’ve used the drug before, but this time, it didn’t work. I took it for three days without getting better.”
She added that her husband later gave her an Imodium tablet from overseas. After using that one, her stomach settled down in just a few minutes.
Mary said this wasn’t the first time she noticed this kind of issue. She asked: “What are we really being sold in Nigeria? What is happening with our medicines?”
She warned that this is a serious danger to public health and urged NAFDAC to take quick action. Mary stressed that people’s lives could be at risk if fake or weak drugs are being sold.
