Chinyere Wilfred shares insights into modern parenting, unstable marriages

Nollywood actress Chinyere Wilfred recently shared her thoughts about modern parenting and the increasing number of unstable marriages. In an interview with The Nation, she said that many families are breaking down because younger generations have moved away from traditional values and are more influenced by modern trends and Gen Z culture.

She said that playing a role in the TV series Sands of Time made her reflect on how she was raising her own children. The role reminded her to take a closer look at how she behaves as a parent and the choices she makes when raising her kids.

Wilfred pointed out that parents today often struggle with how to protect their children while also giving them enough freedom. She explained that even though parents mean well, being too protective can actually harm a child’s development. She compared today’s parenting style with how things were done in her own time and said there’s a big difference.

The actress also spoke about how quickly marriages fall apart these days. She said that people now spend money on weddings, buy Aso Ebi, and soon after, they are divorced. According to her, things were different in the past. She proudly shared that she has been married for over 30 years and is still happily married.

She said that acting in Sands of Time opened her eyes to how she sometimes overreacted with her kids. At first, she didn’t see her mistakes, but watching herself in the role helped her realize that she needed to be calmer. After filming, she changed her attitude at home, especially with her son.

Even now, she said, her grown son who has finished university still isn’t allowed to sleep outside the house. She admitted that she used to think she was just being a good mother by protecting him, but later realized that she might have been doing too much and being overprotective.
