A fight broke out at a polling unit in the Ogba area of Lagos during the local government elections, involving supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a Labour Party (LP) agent.
The trouble reportedly started at Polling Unit 027, located on Yaya Abatan Road in Ifako-Ijaiye, when APC’s chairmanship candidate, Usman Akanbi Hamzat, came to vote. According to eyewitnesses, APC supporters told the LP agent, Spencer Dominic, to move away from where he was standing behind election officers.
When Dominic refused to move, the situation got tense. Reports say that he was shouted at, dragged, and even slapped by APC supporters. Witnesses also claimed that some security officers were present but did not take any action.
Peace was eventually restored after some concerned citizens stepped in to stop the fight and calm everyone down.
Dominic later explained that he was not doing anything wrong. He said he was simply watching the voting process to make sure everything was transparent. He added that he was checking voter cards and observing those who came to vote.
He said, “I was doing my job when the APC chairman came and told me to leave. I refused, and that’s when some of their members attacked me.”
On the other hand, an APC leader, Gbenga Adebowale, said the Labour Party agent was too close to the electoral officials and that this went against polling rules. He explained that the APC chairman was just there to vote and should not have been questioned by an opposition agent.
Adebowale added, “Agents are not allowed to stand behind election officers. There are set boundaries. The LP agent acted in a way that was both confrontational and disruptive.”
