A former Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Agunwa Anakwe, has died at the age of 74. He passed away on Saturday, July 5, after reportedly suffering from a health problem that was not made public.
Anakwe was from Anambra State and served as the Speaker of the House in 1992. His leadership happened during the short civilian government led by the late Chief Ernest Shonekan.
At that time, Anakwe was only 36 years old. But his time in office was cut short when General Sani Abacha carried out a military coup on November 17, 1993, removing Shonekan from power.
During his time as Speaker, Anakwe strongly opposed the creation of new local government areas. He believed it was a trick to delay Nigeria’s return to democratic rule.
May his soul rest in peace. He will be remembered for his bold decisions and contributions to Nigeria’s political journey.
