Nigeria’s Super Falcons are sitting comfortably at the top of Group B after the first round of matches at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Their top spot was confirmed after Algeria defeated Botswana 1-0 in a tough game played on Sunday.
The winning goal came early in the game, with Algeria’s Ghoutia Karchouni finding the back of the net in just the 10th minute. That goal was enough to give Algeria all three points.
Algeria will now prepare to face Tunisia in their next group game on July 10.
Meanwhile, earlier on the same day, the Super Falcons put up a great performance, beating Tunisia 3-0 in their opening match.
Nigerian stars Asisat Oshoala, Rinsola Babajide, and Chiwendu Ihezuo each scored, helping the team start the tournament with a strong win.
Both Nigeria and Algeria now have three points each. However, the Super Falcons are at the top because they scored more goals.
Botswana sits in third place, while Tunisia is at the bottom of the group with no points.
