Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has said that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s only major act in office is protecting criminal acts by people in power. According to him, most of the economic decisions that have made life hard for Nigerians were not taken for the country’s benefit but to protect politicians from being exposed and punished.
He also talked about the recent media chat by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, where Wike expressed concern about a new group formed by opposition politicians.
Kuti believes Wike’s main worry during that chat was that the opposition is trying to change how things are done in government. He said Wike was clearly annoyed with the coalition, feeling like they were being ungrateful even though President Tinubu has done everything to protect members of the political class.
In a video, Kuti jokingly said Wike’s media chat was so revealing it should be rewarded with land. He pointed out that Wike openly said that when Rotimi Amaechi was Rivers State governor, Amaechi’s wife used to receive four billion naira every month. Kuti added that it would have been helpful if Wike had also mentioned how long this went on.
He said people like Wike who support Tinubu are only trying to defend the same old corrupt system. According to him, if people paid close attention to what Wike said, it was clear he was asking the opposition not to destroy the current system because Tinubu is the one protecting them all.
Kuti explained that when Wike says Tinubu is protecting “all of us,” he’s not talking about regular Nigerians but the wealthy and powerful politicians who have been part of corrupt activities for years. He said that Wike was basically shouting that Tinubu is keeping the political elite safe.
Kuti then told Nigerians to understand that when leaders say the president is making bold decisions to help the country, what they really mean is that he’s doing everything to cover up criminal activities. He said Tinubu has made life difficult for everyone just to hide crimes.
In his words, what some call bravery in leadership is actually a form of wickedness, because the suffering Nigerians are going through today is the price of keeping those crimes hidden.
