Lagos-based man allegedly defrauds Trump’s 2025 inauguration fund of N460 million

A man living in Lagos, Nigeria, Ehiremen Aigbokhan, has been accused by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of stealing a huge sum of money meant for the 2025 inauguration of former U.S. President Donald Trump.

According to an FBI report, the fraud happened on December 26, 2024. On that day, a cyberattack was carried out using a trick called Business Email Compromise (BEC). The scam led to the transfer of 250,300 USDT.ETH — a type of cryptocurrency tied to the U.S. dollar and run on the Ethereum network. This amount was worth over N460 million at the time.

This kind of scam, known as BEC, usually involves someone pretending to be a trusted person or official to convince others to send money. In this case, the person behind the scam acted like a top official involved in the inauguration planning and tricked the team into sending the money.

After checking the emails and crypto wallet activities, the FBI traced the origin of the scam back to Nigeria. They discovered that most of the digital activity was linked to Lagos, where the scammer may have operated from.

Now, Ehiremen Aigbokhan is at the center of a worldwide manhunt. The FBI has officially asked for his arrest and plans to charge him with internet fraud and money laundering.

U.S. officials have called this case very serious. They say it shows the growing problem of online scams coming from West Africa. They are urging countries to work together to fight cybercrime more effectively.
