Bodies of Diogo Jota and his brother arrive at church in Portugal ahead of their funeral (photos)

The bodies of footballer Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva have been brought to a church in Portugal for their final farewell.

Early in the morning, friends and family gathered in Gondomar for a wake to honor the two brothers who passed away after a tragic car crash on Thursday, July 3.

The parish priest, Jose Manuel Macedo, shared that the wake would start at 8am at the Capela de Ressurreição, followed by the funeral on Saturday at 10am at the nearby Igreja Matriz. He said the church was open to everyone who wanted to come and remember the brothers and share in the pain and hope of the community.

Reports say Jota’s Lamborghini Huracan had a tire burst while he was overtaking another car on the A-52 highway in Cernadilla, Spain. The car veered off the road, flipped, and caught fire.

The crash happened shortly after midnight and also caused a fire in the surrounding bushes. Emergency workers arrived quickly, but sadly, both brothers had already passed away.

Jota, 28, and André, 26, were on a road trip to Santander. They planned to take a ferry to the UK because Jota was advised not to fly after having surgery on his lungs.

A Spanish official, Angel Blanco, confirmed that both brothers died at the crash site.

The wake this morning was held just about 30 minutes from Porto, Jota’s hometown. It’s especially heartbreaking as he had just married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, only two weeks ago in a joyful ceremony surrounded by loved ones.
