Nigeria’s first indigenous container vessel, M.V. Ocean Dragon arrives Lagos

Nigeria’s first container ship built and operated by locals, M.V. Ocean Dragon, has docked at Tin Can Island Port in Lagos. The ship arrived on Tuesday, carrying more than 350 containers.

At the welcome event, Mrs. Benedine Eloka, Vice President of Clarion Shipping, said the ship’s arrival marks the achievement of a big plan. She explained that the project only succeeded because of teamwork between banks, government bodies, and other important partners.

Mrs. Eloka said the new ship will help solve the long-time problems importers and exporters face when moving containers across Nigeria and West Africa. The ship gives businesses a better way to move goods by sea instead of struggling with land transport.

The Ocean Dragon can carry 349 TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units). This means it can take a large number of containers at once, helping reduce road congestion and delays.

She added that the ship will not only travel along Nigeria’s coastline but will also make regular trips to other countries such as Cotonou, Lome, Ghana, and Sierra Leone. There are also plans to extend its route to Egypt and South Africa. Bookings for routes to Ghana and Lome have already started.

Clarion Shipping is also working on bringing a second ship that will carry containers straight from China to Lagos. This will help avoid the delays and confusion that happen when goods pass through many countries before reaching Nigeria.

Mrs. Eloka mentioned that getting money to buy the ship was one of the toughest parts of the project. But she’s confident about the future because many customers are already interested in using this new service.
