Former Senate President and head of the PDP Reconciliation Committee, Bukola Saraki, has raised alarm over the state of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying more members may still leave the party as it prepares for the 2027 elections.
During a chat with Arise TV, Saraki admitted that the party is currently facing serious internal problems. He warned that Nigerians should expect more key figures to leave the PDP soon.
According to Saraki, “We haven’t seen the worst yet. One or two governors and some senators may still leave the party.” He advised the party to prepare for these possible exits.
However, Saraki pointed out that the current crisis might actually be a blessing in disguise. With nearly two years left before the general elections, the PDP still has time to fix things. He said if this crisis had happened in late 2026, the party would have had no time to recover.
Saraki admitted that the party is not in a good place at the moment, but he believes all is not lost. He said the PDP has been around for over 26 years, and every long-standing party goes through ups and downs.
He also noted that the PDP is still strong in many local communities. According to him, many people in rural areas are not even aware of the internal troubles going on in Abuja. This strong grassroots support, he said, is a sign of hope for the party.
Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Saraki stressed that the PDP needs to change how it operates. He called for a fresh party convention that would bring in young and energetic leaders who can drive the party forward.
Saraki made it clear that solving today’s issues is not enough. The PDP must plan for the future. “The next convention shouldn’t be business as usual,” he said. “We need to bring in younger people who can lead the party to a better future.”
Finally, Saraki warned that if the PDP collapses, Nigeria could become a one-party state. He said this would be dangerous for democracy and must be avoided at all costs.
