Police in Kano have explained that the recent explosion in the eastern part of the state was caused by old military bombs, not a terrorist device as some people first thought.
This was confirmed after a special police team carried out an investigation. The team, which specializes in handling dangerous explosives and chemicals, studied the blast and found it was not from an IED (Improvised Explosive Device).
According to police spokesperson Hussaini Abdullahi, these old bombs, known as Unexploded Ordnance (UXO), were hidden unknowingly among scrap metal brought from Yobe State. One of them exploded while the scrap was being offloaded.
Sadly, the explosion killed five people and injured several others. The police later found nine of these dangerous items at the scene.
The explosion happened at Yongxing Steel Company, located along Ring Road in the Mariri area of Kano, around 11:30 AM on Saturday, June 21, 2025. After checking the area, the police confirmed again that it was caused by an old military bomb and not a planted explosive.
The public is being advised not to panic, as there is no ongoing threat. The police have taken control of the situation and removed all the bombs they found.
In total, police first found seven bombs, and later recovered two more, making it nine in total.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has sent his sympathy to the families of those who died. He also wished a quick recovery to those injured, who are now being treated at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.
Finally, the police are asking people to stay calm, go about their normal lives, and report anything unusual to them through their emergency numbers.
